Physalia physalis
Portuguese man-of-war, Physalia physalis is a highly venomous jellyfish-like creature found in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. Despite its name, it is not a true jellyfish but rather a siphonophore, which is a colonial organism made up of many specialized individual animals called zooids. The Portuguese man-of-war is recognized by its balloon-like float, which is filled with gas and sits above the water, and its long, trailing tentacles, which can reach up to 30 meters in length. These tentacles contain stinging cells called nematocysts that can cause a painful, sometimes dangerous, sting to humans and other animals. It is important to avoid contact with these creatures when swimming or walking on the beach, as even dead specimens on the shore can still cause stings. If stung, immediate first aid should be sought.
